Learning Objectives for
Dissection of the Face

The dissection of the face is divided into the face (superficial face) and the deep face (infratemporal fossa). Do the dissection for the superficial face on both sides, then use the worse side to dissect the deep face.

Basic concepts:
You may wish to review the basic concepts for the head and neck at this time. The link opens a new window which you will need to close to return to this page.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  1. List the parts of the digestive and respiratory tracts in this region, including the salivary glands.
  2. Compare and contrast muscles of mastication with muscles of facial expression.
  3. Recall the contents of the deep face (infratemporal fossa) and the relationships of structures found here.
  4. Describe the components and distribution of cranial nerves in this region (V, VII).
  5. Recall the divisions of the autonomic system into parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, and the distributions of each component in the region.
  6. List each of the foramina in the skull and what traverses each.
  7. Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.

Difficult parts of the dissection:

  1. CAREFULLY follow the instructions for removing the mandible and exposing the deep face.
