Learning Objectives for
Dissection of the Orbit

The dissection of the orbit is approached both superiorly and anteriorly.

Basic concepts:
You may wish to review the basic concepts for the head and neck at this time. The link opens a new window which you will need to close to return to this page.

Specific Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the components and distribution of each cranial nerve.
  2. Recall the divisions of the autonomic system into parasympathetic and sympathetic systems, and the distributions of each component.
  3. List each of the foramina in the skull and what traverses each.
  4. List the contents of the orbit, particularly the intrinsic muscles, their innervation and actions.
  5. Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.

Difficult parts of the dissection:

  1. This dissection is not difficult. The structures are simply small. The hardest part is carefully removing the periorbital fat.
