Learning Objectives for
Dissection of the Orbit
The dissection of the orbit is approached both superiorly and anteriorly.
Basic concepts:
You may wish to review
the basic concepts for the head and neck at this time. The link opens a new window which you will need to close
to return to this page.
Specific Learning Objectives:
- Describe the components and distribution of each cranial nerve.
- Recall the divisions of the autonomic system into parasympathetic and sympathetic systems,
and the distributions of each component.
- List each of the foramina in the skull and what traverses each.
- List the contents of the orbit, particularly the intrinsic muscles, their innervation and
actions.
- Identify anatomic structures in radiographic studies including X-ray, CT scans and MRI films.
Difficult parts of the dissection:
- This dissection is not difficult. The structures are simply small. The hardest part
is carefully removing the periorbital fat.
