GRADES

Your evaluation will be based upon a variety of factors. The clinical evaluation completed by your preceptor is the most important measurement of your accomplishment and will account for 50% of your grade. This is composed of a written overall evaluation of your performance, as well as a series of questions in a checklist format evaluating your performance in a variety of areas. Your clinical skills exercise Pass/Fail grade will figure into the final evaluation. You will also be evaluated on a written examination based upon your textbook and required articles. The examination will be multiple choice, and represents 30% of your final grade. Finally, 20% of your grade is based upon your written projects.

Final Examination (30% of final grade)

A 100 question multiple-choice test, based upon the required text and required articles, is given at the end of the course. The test will largely cover common ambulatory problems.

The clinical skills grade is calculated by dividing the actual points the student scored by the total possible points and then multiplying the result by 25. This number when added to the Clinical Performance grade gives the total clinical points. Scoring for each component of your floor performance is as follows:

4 points - STA     3 points - A
2 points - SLA     1 point – D         Sample Calculation: 68/72=0.9444x25=23.61 (24)

Clinical Skills/Standardized Patient Exercise:

If you pass your clinical skills exercise and are beyond one full standard deviation of the class mean, you will receive one additional point to your overall grade (not to exceed 100 points). If you pass, but are less than one full standard deviation from the mean, you will not receive a point. If you fail the clinical skills exercise or are one full standard deviation below the class mean, you will have one point deducted from your overall grade.

Final Grade:

91 -100 points = honors
86 - 90 points = high pass
65 - 85 points = pass
< 65 points total = fail

Students scoring less than 65% on the examination, but passing the clinical portion, must remediate the exam only. Students failing either of the assignments will have to remediate the assignment. Students failing the clinical portion only must remediate the clinical rotation, and complete a short answer test at the end of the remediation. Other remediation assignments will be determined on a case-by-case basis according to the student’s strengths and weaknesses.

Remediation policies can be accessed online at the SSOM Student Information site - Academic Policy Manual. The web address is <http://www.meddean.luc.edu/ssom/studres/policies>.
