Assignment of Rotations

Prior to starting this required clerkship, each student will be provided with his/her hospital assignments.  The Surgery Clerkship has clinical rotations at three institutions:  Foster G. McGaw Hospital (Loyola University), Hines V.A. Hospital, and Resurrection Hospital in Chicago

Each hospital has provided a clinical coordinator to help students attain a smooth transition into their new environment.  Coordinators serve as an initial and on-site resource if any difficulties arise during your surgical rotations.

Surgery is a 12-week clerkship divided into 2 four-week rotations on General Surgery, a 2week in-patient surgical subspecialty rotation on either (mandatory) Trauma, Peripheral Vascular or the Burn service, and  a 2-week experience in a surgical specialty clinic. Optional Choices include Cardiothoracic, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Orthopedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Pediatric Surgery, and Urology.  All students will spend one month on a General Surgery service at Loyola. Students will list choices for electives, however, assignments are not guaranteed.  Students may not select their Loyola General Surgery rotations.

Even though each hospital is different, the clinical opportunities, lecture material, and conferences  are designed to be equivalent.  It is the aim of the Department of Surgery to provide all students at each of  the affiliate hospitals with a fundamental core of surgical knowledge that is independent of the institution.
