Congratulations!

About 5% of school age girls will have a urine infection. Urine infections are less common among boys. Children who have had a urine infection are at increased risk for a recurrent infection. For this reason a child with a history of urine infection should have a urologic imaging evaluation.

The ultrasound on the right shows a normal right kidney. The left kidney was normal as well.

About 33% of children with urine infection have vesicoureteric reflux. Some children will have upper urinary tract abnormalities as well. For this reason, both a renal ultrasound and a voiding cystourethrogram (VCUG) are necessary.

See this child's VCUG.
