ELECTIVE INSTRUCTIONS
- Carry a pocket-sized student log (provided) with you at all times.
- Achievement of the course objectives, which includes your performance in the ED and documentation of this in your log and folder, is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY.
- In student log:
- write YOUR objectives for this elective on the first page.
- for each patient encounter place a patient sticker and record the chief complaint, diagnosis, and disposition (admit, discharge, surgery, ICU, etc.), including those for which you only observed (resuscitation. etc.). Do not record details of labs and H&P findings.
- briefly describe any meaningful experiences (death notification, dissatisfied patient, domestic abuse, violent patient, etc.).
- describe any procedures performed.
- note important teaching/learning points.
- record the main points of FEEDBACK received from at least 3 ED Faculty.
- Check e-mail every day.
- Contact EMS Secretary at #72549 with questions.
- Arrange with EMS Secretary to take knowledge test at your convenience.
- Arrive for your first shift prepared to see patients.
- Present and discuss cases with any Attending before recording the H&P.
- Inform Attendings before leaving the ED and at the end of your shift.
- Toxicology day is downtown not @ LUMC.
- Notify EMS Secretary, Dr. Mueller & Dr. Lew if you are unable to make your shift.
- Missed shifts should be made up.
- All schedule switches need to be cleared by Dr. Lew or Dr. Mueller.
- No blue jeans or casual t-shirts.
- Present 15 minute review of any case-based EM topic- scheduled by Dr. Lew.
- By the end of the course send a brief narrative(no more than 1 page) via e-mail to Dr. Mueller at jmuell1@lumc.edu that reflects your understanding of the role Emergency Medicine plays in society and the continuum of care.
Feedback
ED Faculty will provide feedback directly to you in the ED. At least 3 examples of constructive feedback from ED Faculty should be briefly summarized and recorded in your logbook. If feedback is not forthcoming, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to solicit it from the Faculty.
* The log will be returned to you after grade determination.
