31 year old man comes to your office complaining of diarrhea and abdominal
cramping for the past month. The diarrhea is watery, but occasionally contains
mucus and blood. On examination, his temperature is 37 degrees, R 18, P 82, BP
120/80. There is mild abdominal tenderness, but no guarding or rigidity. The
liver and spleen are not palpable. On further questioning, he admits that he is
homosexual. His HIV antibody test is negative. Fecal leukocytes are seen on
examination of the stool.
