From The Chair....
The Department of Surgery at Loyola University Medical Center is a true multi-specialty surgical service. The Department is
comprised of a number of Divisions, including; General Surgery,Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Intra-Abdominal Transplantation, Surgical Oncology, Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, Trauma Critical Care Surgery, Oral Surgery and Dental Medicine, Surgical Research and Emergency Medical Services. A number of our faculty are known, not just in the Chicago local and regional level, but are noted Physicians and Surgeons on a national and international level. The three main missions for the Department are; Patient Care, Education, and Research, along with the clinical expertise that a number of our faculty possess. The department also has a robust Education Program, the keystone of our program, is our General Surgery Residency Program, comprised of six categorical Residents per year, this five-year program trains and prepares Residents for both, General Practice Services as well as Fellowships. The Surgery Residency Program also has a number of Preliminary Residents, who are training with us, prior to the formal start of their subspecialty training. Educationally, the department also has a number of Fellowship positions, including Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Critical Care, Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy, and a program in Oral Surgery and Dental Medicine. In conjunction with, The Stritch School of Medicine, the department manages the Surgical Clerkship in the training of medical students. In the arena of research, the department, in conjunction with, The Burn and Shock Trauma Institute, has grants funded through the National Institutes of Health, The Illinois Department of Public Health, and a number of gifts and a medical trust, all with the focus of expanding basic research in the area of surgery, as well as burn, shock and trauma injury. We also have and active research in Surgical Oncology, in conjunction with, the Oncology Institute and the Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center.
