Step 3 -
Dissection of the Back

  1. Following dissection of the more superficial back muscles, reflect the rhomboideus major and minor muscles (video) to expose the serratus posterior superior muscle, levator scapula muscle, and underlying nerves and blood supply as shown in dissection 1 and dissection 2.
    NOTE: The deep branch of the transverse cervical artery is called the dorsal scapular a. if it branches directly off the axillary artery. This artery and the accompanying dorsal scapular n. are found deep to the rhomboideus muscles about one finger's breadth medial to the scapular border.

  2. Examine the major components of erector spinae muscles.

  3. Demonstrate the splenius, semispinalis capitis and longissimus capitis muscles
