Loyola University Medical Education Network Step 1 -
Dissection of the Larynx

  1. Before beginning this dissection, refer back to your earlier dissection of the anterior neck where you dissected the cricothyroid muscle as well as the superior laryngeal nerve and artery.

  2. Begin by removing the mucous membrane that forms the posterior wall of the laryngopharynx. This dissection exposes the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle, arytenoideus muscle and the aryepiglotticus muscle. Find the inferior laryngeal nerve, which is the continuation of the recurrent laryngeal nerve. Be sure to review the cartilaginous components.

  3. The transverse and oblique portions of the arytenoid can be seen on closer inspection.
