Dissection of the Nasal Cavity

  1. The first step is to make a saw cut mid-sagittally through the palate as shown. Because the nasal septum is usually deviated to one side, your bisected nasal cavity should have the nasal septum on one half and the lateral wall of the nasal cavity on the other half.

  2. This dissection exposes the inferior, middle and superior conchae on the lateral wall of the nasal cavity. Use your thin flexible probe to locate the openings (e.g., infundibulum) into the cavity. . In the nasopharynx identify the palate, torus tubarius and associated salpingopharyngeus muscle (fold).

  3. Take a moment to identify other muscular folds (e.g., palatoglossus, palatopharyngeus) which are part of the oropharynx. Compare your dissection with what is shown on a model.
