Dissection of the Anterior Thigh

  1. Clean the branches of the femoral artery as seen in this dissection. Recall that the pectineus m. and the illiopsoas m. form the "floor" of the femoral triangle. The deep femoral artery typically branches off within the femoral triangle.

  2. A closer view shows the medial femoral circumflex artery and the lateral femoral circumflex a. branching from the deep femoral a.
    HINT: The medial femoral circumflex a. can be identified as it dives deep between the iliopsoas and pectineus muscle. The lateral femoral circumflex has a descending branch that follows the lateral border of the rectus femoris muscle inferiorly.
    NOTE: Branches of these arteries are important anastomoses around the hip and knee joint so study them.
