Loyola University Medical Education Network Step 3 -
Dissection of the Gluteus
  1. Clean the remaining short rotators found inferior to the piriformis m. Find the strong tendon of the obturator internus m. where it exits the lesser ischiatic foramen and follow it to its insertion on the greater trochanter. Above and below the tendon you will find the superior and inferior gemelli muscles. Inferior to this you will find the quadratus femoris muscle as seen in this closer view.

  2. Cut the quadratus femoris muscle in the middle and reflect the cut ends medially and laterally to expose the obturator externus muscle which lies just anterior to the quadratus femoris m. We will return to the obturator externus m. again when we dissect the thigh anteriorly.
HINT: The muscles can be stretched and relaxed by rotating the hip joint.
