Dissection of the Knee Joint

  1. Cut the quadriceps tendon above the joint and reflect the patella and patellar ligament inferiorly as shown in the dissection.
NOTE: Appreciate the extent of the suprapatellar bursa under the quadriceps tendon. This bursa is continuous with the knee joint. The tendon, bone and ligament close off the joint anteriorly so once you reflect these you have opened the joint capsule.

  2. The medial (tibial) collateral ligament and the lateral collateral ligament. are thickenings of the capsule so you will have to delineate them with your scapel.
HINT: Flex and extend the joint placing your finger over the region of the collateral ligaments to feel how they tighten on full extension. This will also help you delineate the ligaments.

  3. Remember, the medial collateral ligament is attached to the meniscus as shown in a model.
