Loyola University Medical Education Network Dissection of the Gluteus
For orientation, the gluteus (1), sacrotuberous ligament (2), piriformis (3), sciatic nerve (4) and greater trochanter (5) are labeled. Find the strong tendon of the obturator internus (6) where it exits the lesser ischiatic foramen and follow it to its insertion on the greater trochanter. Above and below the tendon you will find the superior (7) and inferior gemelli (8) muscles. As you clean inferiorly, you will find the quadratus femoris muscle (9). This area is shown in higher magnification. Cut the quadratus femoris muscle in the middle and reflect the cut ends medially and laterally to expose the obturator externus muscle which lies just anterior to the quadratus femoris. Remember, you've already cleaned the obturator externus.
