Dissection of the Posterior Mediastinum

  1. Clean the esophagus, thoracic aorta and the azygos veins as seen in this dissection. Follow the vagus nerves onto the esophagus where they form the anterior and posterior esophageal plexuses (left vagus forms the anterior plexus).
HINT: Don't forget the vagus nerves are already dissected in the neck. Grab them with your forceps, tug and trace them into the posterior mediastinum.

  2. Look for the thoracic duct deep to the esophagus. Attempt to follow the duct to where it drains into the left subclavian vein at the junction with the left internal jugular vein.
