Dissection of the Respiratory System

  1. Carefully remove both lungs by cutting the structures at the hilum. Be sure to isolate the vagus nerves prior to making these cuts. Carefully work your fingers around each lung to free any adhesions. Note how far superiorly the lungs extend into the neck.
  2. Upon removing both lungs, familiarize yourself with the named surfaces and borders. Identify each of the lobes (superior, middle, inferior) and fissures (oblique, horizontal) as shown on the left lung. Remember that there are structural differences between the right and left lung (e.g.,., size of lung, number of lobes, length and size of primary bronchi).

  3. Examine the relationships of structures at the hilum of the lungs (remember the differences between the left and right lungs). You should be able to identify pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, and primary bronchi such as the eparterial bronchus. Dissect some of the lung parenchyma to illustrate the bronchial divisions.
