Loyola University Medical Education Network Step 2 -
Dissection of the Deltoid and Scapula

  1. The last step is to demonstrate the relationship of the suprascapular nerve and artery to the superior transverse ligament as shown on the skeleton. After reflecting the deltoid, palpate along the superior border of the scapula and locate the superior scapular notch (foramen bridged by superior transverse ligament). In this dissection the supraspinatus muscle has been mostly removed to show the transverse ligament with the suprascapular artery passing over the ligament and the suprascapular nerve passing deep to the ligament.

  2. You may wish to view a video of another dissection showing the relationship of the nerve and artery to the transverse scapular ligament.
