Is there a difference in deterioration of Vital capacity based on the type of surgery?
PFT deterioration occurs due to
- Diaphragmatic dysfunction
- Chest wall pain
Vital capacity cam drop by 50% when the surgery is peridiaphragmatic. Further away you go from diaphragm, drop in vital capacity is less. Non-truncal surgery has no effect on PFT.
- Peridiaphragmatic surgery (Gall bladder, Stomach. Heart, Pancreas etc) has the most significant drop in vital capacity following surgery
- Pelvic Surgery : Less dysfunction
- Head and neck and limb surgery: No change in PFT
