Do we need to get complete PFT for preop clearance? For non-pulmonary surgery all we need is
- Spirometry
- Blood gases
- Knowledge of preop CO2 levels and Oxygen is essential. If the patient is a CO2 retainer we have to alert anaesthesiologist. Use of narcotics has to be tempered.
- We need to make sure that the patient is not under hypoxic drive to avoid uncontrolled administration of Oxygen.
- Knowledge of baseline oxygen is also important for determining the significance of postop values.
