Carefully remove the lateral pterygoid piecemeal to reveal the branches of the maxillary artery and mandibular nerve. Find the medial pterygoid muscle (1) maxillary artery (2) branching off the external carotid artery (3), inferior alveolar artery and nerve (4) entering the mandible on its deep surface and the lingual nerve (5). Branches of the maxillary artery and mandibular nerve can be viewed at higher magnifications.
